How to Live with Mom, Again

Usually, when parents are moving out of their own homes, it is because they are no longer able to live independently. You may feel like it’s an obvious solution, it’s your duty even, to have your loved one live with you. But it’s crucial you’re realistic with how much care they will need, and how much you can give.

Usually, when parents are moving out of their own homes, it is because they are no longer able to live independently. You may feel like it’s an obvious solution, it’s your duty even, to have your loved one live with you. But it’s crucial you’re realistic with how much care they will need, and how much you can give.

Consider your parent’s physical and mental condition. If your parent is relatively healthy and able to get around on their own, the amount of care they will need is likely to be minimal on you and your family. (Adult Day Care may be a great option for them and you) But typically, your parent is moving in with you because they are unable to care for themselves independently.

If this is the case, realistically think about the impact this may have on your family and your relationship. For some, this actually brings everyone closer, but this may be a case where your mom is dealing with an illness that will likely progress and need more care.

Adult Day Care

Leaving mom or dad at home, while you go to work, is worrisome. Daycare is an excellent option for those who need more socialization and a limited amount of medical intervention. You also get a break from your parent following you around all day asking you “What time is it?” For seniors living alone or those living with a family member, they may find themselves spending a lot of time alone.

The options for daycare continue to expand. For example, there are now daycare facilities that work with young children and adults, disease-specific options for dementia and Parkinson’s patients are also available. Spend some time doing your homework and visiting different facilities. The cost and the environment should be conducive to your mom or dad’s needs. Considerations should also be made as to where the facility is located. Most daycare operators have specific drop-off and pick up times for various programs, but some also offer to pick up mom or dad from home.
